Lower your utility bill in Maryland

Every program that lowers an electric or gas bill, or helps pay one, in one place. Written in plain language, free to use, from a Maryland nonprofit that receives nothing when you sign up for any of them. It is free because keeping the power on is our mission; if it helps you, we would welcome a donation.

The Savings Finder asks six questions and lists the programs your household likely qualifies for. Your answers stay private, the report is emailed to you, and we never sell or share your information.

Each one has its own page with how it works, who qualifies and how to sign up, with the direct route first.

How we keep this honest

No sales pitch, by design

Plenty of websites list these programs and get paid when you click. This one does not. Three rules shape every page here.

Questions

Before you pick one

Still unsure? Call (443) 222-1221 and a program volunteer will walk through it with you. Free, no sales pitch.

Is this free?
Yes. This guide, the Savings Finder and our phone line are free. Utility Advisor Inc is a Maryland 501(c)(3) nonprofit and receives no compensation for any referral on this site. The programs themselves are paid for by the state, by your utility, or through a credit on your bill.
Do I have to be low-income?
No. The home energy check-up, the HVAC tune-up and community solar are open to Maryland households at any income. State bill help through OHEP has an income limit that depends on household size, and income-qualified households get a larger community solar discount and deeper no-cost home upgrades.
I rent. Does any of this apply to me?
Most of it. If the electric bill is in your name you can join community solar, book a home energy check-up and apply for state bill help. An HVAC tune-up needs the landlord's permission because it is their equipment.
Which should I do first?
If you are behind on a bill or holding a shut-off notice, start with bill help today. Otherwise take the 60-second Savings Finder; it lists the programs your household likely qualifies for, in the order that makes sense for you.

This guide is free because it serves our mission. We also run Maryland's Critical Medical Needs Program, keeping the power on for people whose oxygen, dialysis or refrigerated insulin depends on it. If a page here saved you money, a donation helps keep someone's life-sustaining equipment running.
